Nader-Published

This masterpiece depicts the announcement of the Incarnation by the angel Gabriel to Mary. An original 19" x 27" oil on carton, it places the sacred moment in a Haitian setting. Gabriel kneels on a coral red rug, wings spread and arms crossed over his chest, while Mary sits across from him in a deep blue robe, one hand to her heart and the other resting on an open book. Both wear luminous golden haloes, a small winged figure floats on a cloud above, and a crucifix hangs on the blue cloth behind her. The interior is a rustic log cabin in warm brown and terracotta, with a window opening onto a bright green landscape. A vase of white, orange, and yellow flowers at the center ties the two figures together, and the rich blues and reds against the earthy walls give the scene its jewel-like color and flattened perspective. This stunning piece belongs to the Georges S. Nader family collection and is cataloged in the books “Where Art Is Joy” (p. 79) and “Peintres Haitiens” (#85). Mr. Nader acquired it in 1992 at a prestigious auction house, either Sotheby’s or Christie’s, as he was preparing to inaugurate his private museum in Croix Desprez, Haiti. The painting is signed lower right and is in good condition, consistent with its age. A certificate of authenticity accompanies the work.

Castera Bazile started to work at the Centre d'art in 1944, helping Dewitt Peter's students with the necessary elements for still-life subjects. He soon developed an interest in flowers and composition, and one day, he started to paint himself. He painted three murals in the Episcopal Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in 1951. By 1955, he had participated successfully in several exhibits at the Art Center and overseas- in the U.S. and Europe. He won the grand prize of the Caribbean International Competition sponsored by Alcoa Corporation and the $1,000 grand prize in a Holiday Magazine contest. His figures are often outlined. In 1966, Bazile died prematurely at the peak of his career.

His art is mentioned in all major books on Haitian art and by many international art critics. In his book Peintres Haitiens, Gerald Alexis describes Castera's art as "instinctive compositions with warm, harmonious hues and the typical sincerity of Haitian folks' expression."

Own a piece of art by this artist?
