Beside it, a great tree glows with golden leaves against a deep turquoise sky. Goats and sheep graze and rest across the grassy foreground, giving the scene a calm, pastoral rhythm. Armand’s expressive, layered brushwork and rich palette of greens, golds and violets turn an everyday rural moment into something quietly luminous. Small touches of blue, green and red in the figures’ clothing and headwraps add warmth and life to the shaded center of the composition. The painting is signed and dated “Gesner Armand 97” at the lower right. Condition is good, consistent with its age. A certificate of authenticity from the gallery accompanies the painting.

Gesner Armand studied art both in Paris and Mexico. As a renowned Haitian painter, he has exhibited in Haiti, Mexico, the United States, Paris, Spain, Jamaica, Martinique, Venezuela, Barbados, the Dominican Republic, Guadeloupe, and Israel. He is known for his luminous country scenes and pigeons, and although his still lives reveal an undeniable Mexican Influence, his art reflects his intense love for his country, Haiti. "Armand's substantial work rests upon a mastery of color effects and a pure drawing." (Peintres Haitiens, Gerald Alexis).
