Four figures work together beneath a lush canopy of banana trees, their movements echoing the land’s natural cadence. Rich greens and deep earth tones evoke the tropical abundance of rural Haiti, while the soft modeling of figures reveals Lévêque’s sensitivity to human labor and community. Painted in the 1960s, this work reflects the artist’s commitment to portraying everyday life with harmony and grace—an enduring hallmark of Haitian painting from the post–Centre d’Art generation. The painting is in good condition overall, with minor age-appropriate wear. It is sold unframed and will be shipped directly from the Dominican Republic. We will issue a Certificate of Authenticity upon purchase.

The Haitian artist Gabriel Lévêque was born in 1923 and died in 2013. In the early days of the Centre d'Art, co-director Selden Rodman invited William Calfee to instruct the primitive painters in the tempera technique for frescos. The Episcopal Bishop Voegeli, over the objection of higher-ups and the local elite, asked Obin, Benoit, Bigaud, Bazile, and Lévèque to decorate the church. It was a masterstroke, and all five artists have gained greater fame. Leveque's angels were above the main altar in the Episcopal Church, which was sadly destroyed during the Haiti 2010 earthquake. "The soft colors Lévèque uses are well suited to his holy pictures," says Gérald Alexis in his book Peintres Haitiens. (Bio Source: Haiti Vooddo Kingdom to Modern Riviera by John Allen Franciscus- pp. 77)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0527/9979/9453/files/Leveque_Gabriel24x16IntheFieldsOilonBoardPainting_1YN.jpg?v=1750366368
https://www.naderhaitianart.com/en-nl/products/gabriel-leveque-1923-2013-24x16-in-the-fields-c1960-oil-on-board-painting-1yn
