His talent was discovered by the American sculptor Jason Seley, who brought him to the Centre d'Art in 1948, where he became the only sculptor whose work was accepted into the Centre's exhibitions and later took up painting as well. In the early 1950s he contributed a mural and a terra cotta choir screen to the Episcopal Cathedral of Sainte Trinite in Port-au-Prince, works later lost in the 2010 earthquake. Known for an animalist sensibility and a quiet, moralizing wit drawn from Haitian folklore and the natural world, Joseph remains one of Haiti's most original and beloved artists. This painting comes from a private collection in Canada. The painting is unframed and presented in overall good condition consistent with its age.
