Delicate veves, the sacred ceremonial symbols of Haitian Vodou, are drawn into the shadowed background and onto the vessels, giving the scene a quiet spiritual charge. Gourgue was among the first generation of painters to emerge from the Centre d’Art in Port-au-Prince, and he became known for bringing Vodou imagery into a modern, expressive visual language. Here his thick, sculptural brushwork and jewel-toned palette give the surreal composition real depth and presence. The painting is signed “J.E. Gourgue” at the lower left. Condition is good, consistent with its age.
