andre-eugene-zanset-bwa-carved-wood-sculpture
André Eugène 50"x19"x18" Zanzet Bwa Carved Wood Sculpture #4HK

This large-scale work by Andre Eugene, named "Zanset Bwa" by the gallery, Haitian Creole for "wooden ancestors," is carved from a single gnarled root form into a tangle of interlocking skeletal figures and faces. The deeply textured surface and visible grain of the wood lend the piece a weathered, excavated quality, as though the figures were uncovered rather than carved. As a founding member of the Atis Rezistans collective working out of Port-au-Prince's Grand Rue, Eugene is known both for his assemblage sculpture and for large-scale carved wood works like this one, which draw on themes of ancestry, mortality, and the Vodou spirit world. The piece shows some cracking along the wood grain and a few broken sections consistent with its scale and organic material, which read as part of its weathered, excavated character. This piece comes from a private collection in New York. We will provide a Certificate of Authenticity.

André Eugène (b. 1959) is a Haitian assemblage sculptor working in scrap metal, wood, and found objects. Born in downtown Port-au-Prince, he trained in the woodcarving tradition of the Grand Rue neighborhood and became a founding member of the artists' collective Atis Rezistans and a leading figure among the Sculptors of Grand Rue. His studio there served as a workshop, gallery, and museum. His contemporary sculpture draws on Vodou, mortality, sexuality, and Haiti's social and economic struggles. In 2006 he contributed to a large collective sculpture now permanently exhibited at the International Slavery Museum in Liverpool. His work has been shown at the Museum of Ethnography in Geneva, the Fowler Museum at UCLA, Nottingham Contemporary, and the Grand Palais in Paris, and was included in the Haitian Pavilion at the 54th Venice Biennale. After more than 50 years in Grand Rue, he relocated to Port-Salut in southern Haiti.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0527/9979/9453/files/AndreEugene50_x19_x18_CarvedWoodSculpture.jpg?v=1791246025
