"Open the Gate II" was the artist's work in progress when the earthquake hit, it was half complete. The right half of the painting is pre-earthquake and the left half is post-earthquake. One can notice on the left half that there are faint symbols of eyes mixed in the pattern. This appearance of eyes after the earthquake is something we note in this painting. The artist's signature and date are in the lower right corner of the composition; entitled "Open The Gate II". The artwork is an abstract composition of geometric forms including triangular arrow like shapes with points; hieroglyphic symbols as well overlapping forms with hard edges lined in black. "The Earthquake" Collection is a series of five paintings created by one of the most celebrated Haitian contemporary artist, Philippe Dodard. The works are typical of the artist's oeuvre of Expressionist compositions that make political and social implications; hieroglyphics with hidden meanings; in this case the earthquake that devastated Haiti. The artist's use of great color intensity magnifies the emotion.
