Description
Description
This original oil on board by Tamara Baussan presents a lively Haitian neighborhood scene centered on daily life and communal activity. A group of women and children gather outdoors, engaged in washing, conversation, and domestic tasks, surrounded by modest architecture, hanging garments, and market goods. The composition captures a moment of shared presence, where gesture and posture convey both individuality and collective rhythm. Baussan’s painterly approach is evident in her loose brushwork, soft transitions of color, and balanced use of light. The palette, composed of gentle earth tones, greens, and muted pastels, reinforces the warmth and familiarity of the setting. Figures are rendered with expressive simplicity, allowing the scene to unfold naturally without rigid detailing, a characteristic approach within modern Haitian painting. Executed in 1998, this work reflects Baussan’s focus on everyday Haitian life, emphasizing community, labor, and environment. The painting aligns with the broader tradition of Haitian genre scenes, where narrative emerges through observation rather than symbolism, offering both cultural authenticity and strong visual accessibility for collectors. This work comes from the family collection of Marie and Georges S. Nader, further reinforcing its provenance and historical continuity within a recognized lineage of Haitian art collecting. Provenance includes the family collection of Marie and Georges S. Nader and Myriam Nader Haitian Art Gallery. A certificate of authenticity will be issued.
About this artist
About this artist
Tamara Baussan (1909–1999) was a Russian-born Haitian painter and one of the earliest professional women artists active in modern Haitian art. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, she later moved to Haiti, where she became a key figure in the country’s emerging art scene. Baussan played an important role in the founding of the Centre d’Art in Port-au-Prince in 1944 and was associated with the Atelier de la Tête de l’Eau, supporting the visibility of women artists in Haiti. Her work is known for strong draftsmanship and vibrant color, creating expressive and dynamic compositions. As art historian Gérald Alexis noted in Peintres Haïtiens, her use of color intensifies the power of her imagery. Today, Tamara Baussan is recognized as a pioneering figure in Haitian modern art, and her works are valued by collectors for their historical importance and artistic strength.
