Step into a rainforest that exists only in imagination. In this richly layered oil on canvas, Haitian artist Jacques Geslin conjures a jungle sanctuary where elephants move quietly through emerald undergrowth, a lion surveys his territory from a mossy clearing, and a leopard threads through caladium leaves and wild orchids. Overhead, hummingbirds and a long-plumed tropical bird hover among vine draped trees, their jewel tones catching light that filters down through the canopy. Geslin, born in Jacmel in 1954, trained under masters including Jean-René Jérôme and Raoul Dupoux before developing his own signature vision of paradise, one deliberately free of any human presence so that nature alone commands the eye. That vision is fully realized here, a dense, dreamlike ecosystem built from Geslin's imagination rather than any single Haitian landscape, rendered at 40 x 30 inches with the meticulous detail and layered depth that define his most sought after work. Geslin paints our birds and domestic animals and takes care to respect the delicacy of our plants as he renders them with originality surpassing that of nature. In short, he has created a Haitian forest drawn from his imagination. From 1978 to 1985, he exhibited chiefly in the United States, the Dominican Republic, Martinique, Guadeloupe, and France. Today, Jacques Geslin’s work is well acclaimed among private international art collectors and showcased in Haiti, the United States, the Dominican Republic, Martinique, Guadeloupe, France, and Japan.
