About this artist

Gesner Armand (1936–2008) was a Haitian painter born in Croix-des-Bouquets, Haiti. At an early age he joined the Centre d’Art in Port-au-Prince, where Pierre Monosiet introduced him to watercolor painting. Armand later studied and worked in Mexico from 1958 to 1960 and received a scholarship from the French government in 1961 to continue his artistic training in Paris, where he lived until 1962. After returning to Haiti, Armand settled in Croix-des-Bouquets and later served as director of the Museum of Haitian Art at St. Pierre’s College. Known for luminous countryside scenes, pigeons, and vibrant depictions of Haitian life, his work reflects both Mexican artistic influence and a deep affection for his homeland. Art historian Gérald Alexis wrote that “Armand’s substantial work rests upon a mastery of color effects and a pure drawing.”
