Description

This intricate and highly symbolic composition by Haitian artist Frantz Zéphirin presents a central mermaid-like figure emerging from water, surrounded by multiple faces, hybrid beings, and spiritual forms. The work reflects Zéphirin’s distinctive visual language, where Vodou symbolism, mythology, and imaginative storytelling converge. At the center, a pink-toned figure with a serpent tail raises one arm in a gesture that suggests invocation or transformation. The figure is framed by mirrored profiles and a surrounding field of faces, evoking a multiplicity of presences and identities. The composition suggests themes of duality, spirituality, and the connection between human, animal, and supernatural realms. Zéphirin’s dense surface is filled with finely rendered details, rhythmic patterns, and layered imagery. The palette of deep blues, greens, reds, and ochres creates a dynamic contrast, while the repetition of eyes and faces reinforces the sense of an all-seeing spiritual environment. Frantz Zéphirin is one of Haiti’s most important contemporary artists, known for elaborate compositions that blend Vodou symbolism, history, and fantasy. His work is widely collected for its complexity, narrative richness, and unmistakable style within contemporary Haitian art. This original oil on board is hand-signed by the artist and is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity issued by Myriam Nader Haitian Art Gallery.

About this artist

Frantz Zephirin started painting in 1973 with the Haitian master Antoine OBIN. Very quickly, he broke away from the styled school of Cap Haitian artists and began to work in a highly original style. Starting with themes from the Bible and current events, his paintings soon reflected the delirium of his powerful, devastating imagination. Zephirin frequently uses animals painted in brilliant, sharply contrasting colors to speak out frankly. His highly creative style, which deals with themes of politics, social, and voodoo subjects, soon captured the art world's attention in Haiti, and his career took off very rapidly. Zephirin's work is characterized by intense colors, intricate patterns, and tightly surrounded compositions. He is exceptionally productive, his imagination is compelling, and his social criticism is disturbing. Presently Zepherin's work is recognizable by human figures with animals heads-representing his deep contempt for the commanding body. His art has been featured in art museums and galleries around the world. Since the Haiti earthquake, Zephirin has been featured in stories in the New York Times, Le Monde, the Wall Street Journal, the Los Angeles Times, the Times of London, the Guardian, and the BBC. His art has been showcased in the exhibit Haiti Art Naif: Memories of Paradise at the art center Denkmalschmiede Hofgen in Germany.
