Jacques-Enguerrand Gourgue was born in Port-au-Prince in 1930 and died in 1996. He was undisputedly the leading figure in modern Haitian painting. He joined the Centre d" Art in 1947. Gourgue had his distinguishable style, featuring the Haitian mountains, skeletal trees, peasants and their huts, and Vodou symbolism in a fantastic way. His art was exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art in N.Y., including at the Sotheby's and Christie's auction houses in Europe, North America, and Latin America.
