Description
In this painting, one can view Cap-Haitien's form of art, characterized by linear elements and the artistic use of paints and brushstrokes of everyday life in a house. The Cap-Haitian school's unique skill is based on the subjects of the Haitian way of life, the people, the Haitian culture, and the country's heritage, which differ from the traditional voodoo subjects and symbols.
About this artist
About this artist
Self-taught artist Eddy Jacques was born in Cap-Haïtian, Haiti, in 1957, and began painting in 1978 at Rony Gaetjens's studio. His work is closely linked to the Cap-Haïtian school, known for its detailed technique and focus on portraying Haiti’s everyday life, people, culture, and heritage—making it distinct from the more widely recognized Vodou-inspired themes seen in other Haitian art movements. Jacques’s paintings are known for their bold linear elements and expressive brushwork, inspired by everyday life observations. His compositions emphasize the harmony, rhythm, and genuine character of Haitian society, making his work an important voice in northern Haiti’s artistic tradition. The renowned French art historian Jean-Marie Drot observed that Jacques’s work has been exhibited in the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and France, and described his artistic touch as fine, delicate, and characterized by beautifully understated colors. His praise highlights Jacques’s subtle yet powerful visual language and his standing among the respected contemporary painters of Cap-Haïtian.
