Description
Gervais-Emmanuel Ducasse (1920–1988), widely known as G.E. Ducasse, was one of Haiti's most celebrated self-taught masters and a founding figure of modern Haitian art. This rare and highly collectible original triptych oil on board, titled Dans la Neige (In the Snow), offers an exceptional glimpse into the artist's observations during a visit to New York. Composed of three panels measuring 24 x 16 inches each and presented in a substantial framed format measuring approximately 24 x 72 inches overall, the painting depicts a snow-covered street scene near Albany and Troy, New York. Figures move through an icy winter landscape lined with historic wooden houses, while handwritten inscriptions along the lower edge record the artist's personal reflections on the scene. The work is rendered in Ducasse's distinctive narrative style, blending documentary observation, memory, and folk-modernist expression. Paintings depicting American subjects are exceedingly uncommon within Ducasse's oeuvre, making this triptych a particularly desirable example for collectors of Haitian art, Caribbean modernism, and self-taught international artists. The panoramic composition captures the atmosphere of a northeastern winter through a refined palette of pale blues, grays, whites, and muted greens, creating a striking contrast with the tropical imagery more often associated with Haitian painting. The artwork is signed by G.E. Ducasse in the lower right and inscribed across the lower edge of the panels. It remains in good condition and is housed in an attractive frame.

About this artist
About this artist
Gervais Emmanuel Ducasse was considered the most genuine of the Haitian primitive painters. He was a charming and submissive painter who seemed to have no conception of the environment. He took snapshots of life, notwithstanding either good or evil. Such paintings by Ducasse are jealously guarded by collectors all over the world. Ducasse's name is mentioned in all significant Haitian art books, and his artworks are exhibited at many museums worldwide, including Nader's Art Museum, Museum" College St Pierre" in Haiti, and the Brooklyn Museum of Art in NY.
