Description

Sleeping Merchant is an original oil on canvas by Haitian artist Néhémy Jean (1931-2007), signed and dated 1969. The composition portrays a weary market merchant resting beside her goods, offering a quiet and dignified glimpse into everyday life in Haiti. Through its restrained palette, balanced composition, and sensitive observation, the painting reflects the artist's ability to elevate ordinary moments into enduring expressions of Haitian culture. Néhémy Jean was among the leading academically trained painters of modern Haitian art. After joining the Centre d'Art in Port-au-Prince in 1947 under Dieudonné Cédor, he became a founding member of the Foyer des Arts Plastiques in 1950. He later refined his painting with V. Pierre-Noël and Georges Ramponeau and studied portraiture in New York before returning to Haiti, where he helped establish the Brochette Art Gallery and later founded L'Atelier Gallery. His murals were commissioned for the Port-au-Prince International Airport, El Rancho Hotel, and Choucoune Hotel, and his work has been exhibited throughout the United States, Europe, and Suriname. Painted in 1969, this work belongs to an important period of the artist's career, during which he produced refined genre scenes that combined academic technique with authentic representations of Haitian daily life. The sleeping vendor, surrounded by her merchandise, embodies both the quiet resilience and humanity of Haiti's marketplace traditions, recurring themes throughout Jean's oeuvre. The painting exhibits age-related wear consistent with its vintage character and is offered in its present condition. This artwork comes from the private collection of Myriam Nader. A Certificate of Authenticity issued by Myriam Nader Haitian Art Gallery accompanies the purchase.
