Description

Henri Christophe Library and Prefecture, Cap-Haïtien is an original painting by Haitian artist Nemours Vincent depicting one of northern Haiti's most recognizable historic landmarks. The composition captures the Préfecture and the Henri Christophe Library bustling with residents, vendors, and families, celebrating the vibrant civic life and architectural heritage of Cap-Haïtien. Working in the Haitian Naïve tradition, Vincent combines meticulous architectural detail with lively figures and brilliant color to create a compelling portrait of everyday life. His paintings preserve the character of Haiti's historic cities while documenting the customs, community, and cultural identity that define them. This work is both a historical record and a celebration of Cap-Haïtien, one of Haiti's most important cultural centers and the city most closely associated with King Henri Christophe. Rich in narrative and local character, the painting is an excellent example of contemporary Haitian figurative art. The artwork comes from a private collection in Seattle, Washington, and will be shipped directly from the collection to the purchaser. A Certificate of Authenticity issued by Myriam Nader Haitian Art Gallery accompanies the purchase.

About this artist

Nemours Vincent was born in Cap-Haïtien, Haiti, on April 10, 1949. A Haitian painter associated with the renowned Cap-Haïtien School, he began painting in 1971 after studying under Charles Anatole. Influenced by masters Antoine Obin and Préfète Duffaut, Vincent developed a distinctive primitive style known for its narrative compositions, meticulous detail, and vivid depictions of Haitian life and architecture. His paintings reflect the rich artistic tradition of northern Haiti while expressing his own refined vision. Collected internationally, Vincent's work was notably acquired by the late Academy Award-winning filmmaker and distinguished Haitian art collector Jonathan Demme. Today, Nemours Vincent's original paintings are sought after for their historical significance, technical precision, and enduring contribution to Haitian art.
