Ernst Jean-Louis was born on October 12, 1949, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. He is the brother of Haitian painter William Jean-Louis and developed his artistic career within Haiti’s vibrant postwar art scene. He attended primary school at Darius Denis and later studied at Lycée Toussaint Louverture. Ernst Jean-Louis began painting under the guidance of Antoine Daniel and Senatus, developing a style rooted in Haitian artistic traditions. In 1971, he participated in an exhibition at the Centre d’Art, Haiti’s leading artistic institution, marking an important step in his professional career. His work reflects the rich visual culture of Haiti and contributes to the continuity of modern Haitian painting. Today, Ernst Jean-Louis’s paintings are appreciated by collectors for their connection to Haiti’s artistic heritage and their place within the country’s evolving contemporary art tradition.
