Description
This original oil on board painting, Three Loas, was created by renowned Haitian artist Prosper Pierre-Louis (1947-1997) and is signed and dated 1988. A leading figure of Haiti's influential Saint Soleil movement, Pierre-Louis masterfully portrays three lwa, or Vodou spirits, through his signature style of vibrant color, intricate patterning, and richly symbolic imagery.
Inspired by Haiti's spiritual traditions, Pierre-Louis developed a distinctive visual language that blends abstraction with sacred symbolism. Raised in Bainet near Jacmel, he was introduced to Vodou ceremonies through his father, a houngan, experiences that profoundly influenced his artistic vision. His paintings are celebrated for their rhythmic compositions, luminous palettes, and mystical figures that bridge the visible and invisible worlds. Painted during the artist's mature period, Three Loas exemplifies the qualities that established Prosper Pierre-Louis as one of the most important Haitian painters of the twentieth century. The three monumental spiritual figures emerge from an intricately textured surface framed by vibrant floral motifs, creating a composition that conveys movement, harmony, and spiritual presence. Rich in symbolism and cultural significance, the painting is an outstanding example of modern Haitian art. This work was exhibited in Diaspora Calling! at the historic Kings Theatre in Brooklyn, New York, in an exhibition curated by Lauren Hills. Its documented exhibition history further strengthens the artwork's provenance and reflects its recognition within exhibitions celebrating Haitian art and the Haitian diaspora. Prosper Pierre-Louis' works are represented in major museum and private collections worldwide and continue to be highly sought after by collectors of Haitian, Caribbean, and contemporary art. This artwork comes from the private collection of Myriam F. Nader. A Certificate of Authenticity issued by Myriam Nader Haitian Art Gallery accompanies the purchase.
