About this artist
Dieudonné Cédor was born in L'Anse-à-Veau on March 8, 1925, and he left a remarkable legacy upon his passing on September 27, 2010. He made a significant impact in the art world when he joined the Centre d'Art in December 1947. Under the guidance of Rigaud Benoit, Cédor mastered the fundamental principles of pictorial art, quickly establishing himself as a talented artist. Dewit Peters, the founder of the Centre d'Art, recognized his potential and appointed him as the chief of the studio.
In 1949, Cédor took a prominent role as a member of the administrative committee of the Centre d'Art. Amidst a conflict between the artists and the management, he rose to the position of president of the Haitian Artist Association, demonstrating his leadership and commitment to the artistic community. He later became a founding member of the Foyer des Arts Plastiques (F.D.A.P) and served as its director from 1952 to 1956.
In 1956, Cédor, along with fellow artists Luckner Lazard and Roland Dorcely, founded the Galerie Brochette, showcasing his influential presence in the art scene until 1962. The following year, he was appointed director of the Museum of Beaux-Arts in Port-au-Prince, solidifying his status as a leading figure in the Haitian art world.
Dieudonné Cédor is a celebrated contemporary painter whose work commands recognition. His name is prominently featured in all major art publications, including “Peintres Haïtiens.” Gérald Alexis aptly states that “Cédor can handle any subject, expressing joy or sorrow, the splendor and anxieties of life,” affirming his mastery and impact on the art landscape.
