About this artist

Luce Turnier was born in Jacmel, Haiti, on February 24, 1924, and died in Paris, France, in 1995. One of Haiti's pioneering modernist painters, she was among the few women associated with the early Centre d'Art and helped redefine modern Haitian art. Awarded scholarships to study in New York and Paris, Turnier developed a distinctive style that blended Haitian identity with modernist painting, collage, and abstraction. Her portraits are admired for their psychological depth, while her studies of nature reveal a lyrical sensitivity and expressive use of color. Gérald Alexis observed that “Turnier's portraits reflect the Haitian's soul while her studies are a hymn to tropical nature.” Today, Luce Turnier's paintings are represented in important museum and private collections worldwide and remain highly sought after for their artistic innovation and lasting contribution to modern Haitian art.
