Description
La Ville Imaginaire is a sweeping oil on canvas by Prefete Duffaut, one of the founding masters of the Haitian art movement and a leading voice within the Saint Soleil tradition of imagined architecture. Painted in 1976 and signed and dated by the artist, this 24 x 36 inch canvas unfolds a fantastical coastal town built into terraced hillsides, its winding roads threading between candy colored houses, churches, and palm groves that cascade down to a harbor filled with sailboats and a lone steamship. Crowds of tiny figures animate the shoreline and switchback paths, a hallmark of Duffaut's ability to compress an entire imagined civilization into a single canvas. The painting comes from a private collection in New Mexico and remains unframed, offered in excellent original condition. Duffaut's imaginary cities are among the most sought after subjects in his body of work, prized for their intricate detail, saturated color, and visionary reimagining of Haiti's landscape. We will provide a Certificate of Authenticity.
