About this artist

Jacques Valbrun (1938–1992) was a Caribbean-born painter from Martinique who developed his artistic career in Cap-Haïtien, Haiti. He initially studied to become a Catholic brother before pursuing art, later attending Notre Dame and Philippe Guerrier High School. Valbrun began painting in 1963 under the guidance of painter-sculptor Jean Marques Valbrun, developing a distinctive surrealist style. His work is known for urban and marine landscapes rendered with structured lines and vivid color. As noted by art historian Gérald Alexis in Peintres Haïtiens, his compositions reflect both discipline and expressive intensity. Valbrun exhibited in Haiti and internationally, and his artistic legacy continues through his sons, painters Johnny Valbrun and Reginald Valbrun.
