Description
In Weaving in the Countryside, Gabriel Lévêque captures the essence of Haitian rural life with quiet reverence. Three figures skillfully weave baskets under the shade of lush trees, their synchronized gestures reflecting harmony and cooperation. The soft greens and blues of the landscape contrast with the warm tones of the figures, embodying the artist’s sensitive balance between human activity and nature. Executed in the 1960s, this painting reflects Lévêque’s mastery of everyday themes rendered with poetic simplicity. His scenes of rural craftsmanship and agricultural labor offer a tribute to Haiti’s enduring cultural rhythms. The painting is in good condition with minor age-related wear and is sold unframed. It will be shipped directly from the Dominican Republic, and we will issue a COA upon purchase.

About this artist
The Haitian artist Gabriel Lévêque was born in 1923 and died in 2013. In the early days of the Centre d'Art, co-director Selden Rodman invited William Calfee to instruct the primitive painters in the tempera technique for frescos. The Episcopal Bishop Voegeli, over the objection of higher-ups and the local elite, asked Obin, Benoit, Bigaud, Bazile, and Lévèque to decorate the church. It was a masterstroke, and all five artists have gained greater fame. Leveque's angels were above the main altar in the Episcopal Church, which was sadly destroyed during the Haiti 2010 earthquake. "The soft colors Lévèque uses are well suited to his holy pictures," says Gérald Alexis in his book Peintres Haitiens.
