Description
Description
Painted around 1960, this striking work by Jacques-Enguerrand Gourgue (1930-2007) is a dream-like Vodou still life, a subject for which the artist is celebrated. A sleeping face emerges from a bleached, gnarled tree, surrounded by ritual objects: a glowing blue conch vessel, a mortar and pestle, a clay jug, a flickering candle and a long pink fish. Delicate veves, the sacred ceremonial symbols of Haitian Vodou, are drawn into the shadowed background and onto the vessels, giving the scene a quiet spiritual charge. Gourgue was among the first generation of painters to emerge from the Centre d’Art in Port-au-Prince, and he became known for bringing Vodou imagery into a modern, expressive visual language. Here his thick, sculptural brushwork and jewel-toned palette give the surreal composition real depth and presence. The painting is signed “J.E. Gourgue” at the lower left. Condition is good, consistent with its age. A certificate of authenticity from the gallery accompanies the painting.
About this artist
About this artist
Jacques-Enguerrand Gourgue (Haitian, 1930-1996) was one of Haiti's most renowned painters of the 20th century. Gourgue began painting at an early age and eventually had his works exhibited throughout Europe and the Americas. His father was a French psychiatrist, and his mother was said to be a Haitian voodoo priestess.
J.E Gourgue typically painted scenes of rural Haitian life and vodou ceremonies. Gourgue, who had no formal training, often combined flowers, mountains, skeletal trees, peasants and their huts, and voodoo symbolism in a personal style that combined surrealism and naive art. "He is beyond dispute the leading figure in modern Haitian painting."
