Description

Standing sixteen inches tall on a carved wood base measuring 5.75 by 2.5 by 1.75 inches, this sculpture captures a Haitian market woman in the moment before she sets off, one arm steadying the wide basket balanced on her head, the other resting at her hip. The pose is one Ludovic Booz returned to throughout his career, the marchande, or market woman, whose labor of carrying goods to and from market has long stood as a symbol of resilience and daily life in Haiti. Booz trained at Haiti's Centre d'Art under Antonio Joseph and became known for elongating and simplifying the female form into spare, almost architectural lines, a style he carried across both his sculpture and his paintings. He was also the first Haitian sculptor to treat his wood with beeswax, giving pieces like this one their distinctive warmth and patina. This piece comes from a private collection in Massachusetts. It is a one-of-a-kind, hand-carved work; no two Booz carvings are identical. We will provide a Certificate of Authenticity.

About this artist

Ludovic Booz was born on June 16, 1940 in Aquin, Haiti. Booz started drawing very early with anything that came to hand: charcoal, chalk, pencil, or pen. He settled in Port-au-Prince in 1946 and began study at the Academy of Fine Arts in 1960. He is both painter and sculptor. His career began at the Art Center, where he encountered Antonio Joseph. Since then, he has sculpted squares of wood from which he derives spiral forms representing women and motherhood. Booz was the first sculptor to use beeswax to treat wood. Very modern in his concepts, he is said to “sculpt with a brush” and has an astonishing command of color. Among his distinctions are the following special commissions: a bronze bust of President François Duvalier for the Esso Salon; a bronze bust of President John F. Kennedy (Dallas); a burst of President Dumarsais Estimé. He has taken part in numerous exhibitions, notably in Israel, Surinam, and France.
