Description
This original Haitian painting by Lyonel Laurenceau draws the viewer into a tender, close-set scene of two smiling figures in white and blue head cloths, one embracing the other. Round calabash gourds and a clay water vessel crowd the frame and echo the curves of the figures. The palette moves between cobalt blue, weathered white, golden ochre, and earthy brown, with small red-orange accents at the waist cloth. The thickly built-up, crackled surface reads almost like relief or aged plaster, giving the warm faces a quiet presence. Gourds like these are everyday vessels for carrying water and food, so the scene speaks to daily life, family, and community. The work is signed lower right and comes from the private collection of Myriam F. Nader. Condition is good, consistent with its age. We will provide a Certificate of Authenticity.

Lyonel Laurenceau is born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti in 1942 and studied art at the ABC School of Paris. "His excellent technique enables him to paint affecting, portraits types" (Gerald Alexis, Peintres Haitiens). His art is referred in all major books about Haitian art.
