Description

Painted around 1970, this charming village scene by Micius Stephane captures a quiet moment of daily life in rural Haiti. Women and children gather along a pale, winding road to wash, fold and lay out clothes, while a child peeks out from behind a tree at the right. Pink and tan thatched-roof houses sit among rolling golden hills, and stylized teal trees with graceful branching limbs fill the landscape under a bright blue sky. The flat planes of color, rhythmic patterns and gentle storytelling are hallmarks of Haitian naive painting, and the soft, harmonious palette gives the scene a warm, timeless feel. The painting is signed “M. Stephane” at the lower center. Condition is good, consistent with its age. A certificate of authenticity from the gallery accompanies the painting.

About this artist

Micius Stéphane was born in Bainet, a small village on Haiti’s southern coast in 1912 and died in 1996. Micius earned his living for years a cobbler, a “Sunday sculptor”. In 1946, he met Dewitt Peters and began his painting career at the Art Center. A naïve painter, he renders charming scenes from daily life in Haiti with minute accuracy. He is considered one of Haiti’s eminent contemporary artists. From 1961 to 1979, he exhibited in Germany, the United States, England, Italy, and France. André Malraux sponsored one of his Paris exhibitions. His art is prized by collectors and is in the permanent collections of Musée d’Art Nader and Musée d’Art Haitien of College Saint Pierre, both in Haiti and the Detroit Institute of Arts, in Detroit, Michigan. His children, Peters Stéphane and Edith Stéphane are also painters.
