Description
Description
Vodou Dance is a striking signed colored ink drawing on paper by the late Belgian artist Raymond Callebaut, dated 1977. The composition captures two figures in mid-motion, their forward-leaning bodies and grounded steps evoking the rhythm, intensity, and spiritual charge of a Vodou dance. Callebaut’s expressive use of ink, combined with fluid washes of color, gives the scene a sense of immediacy and ritual movement. The artist’s confident line work and restrained palette focus attention on gesture and posture, allowing the figures’ ceremonial presence to emerge against a minimal, atmospheric background. Subtle tonal variations and energetic brush-like marks reflect Callebaut’s deep engagement with Caribbean culture and Vodou traditions during his years working in Haiti. This work was personally selected by renowned art critic Gerald Alexis for inclusion in the Marie & Georges S. Nader Family Collection, underscoring its curatorial and historical importance. The drawing is signed and dated “Callebaut ’77” and is in good condition, with light, age-appropriate handling consistent with works on paper. Upon purchase, a Certificate of Authenticity will be issued by Myriam Nader Haitian Art Gallery. An evocative and intimate example of Callebaut’s late period, Vodou Dance is well suited for collectors of Caribbean art, Vodou-inspired imagery, and expressive modern works on paper.
