Description
Description
A refined figurative work by Jean René Jérôme depicting a contemplative woman in three-quarter view, set against a deep blue ground. Her white headscarf and red beaded necklace introduce subtle accents, while her softly modeled form is rendered in warm ochre tones. A tall ceramic vase with delicate flowering stems balances the composition, creating a dialogue between figure and still life.
Jérôme’s signature style merges classical structure with modern simplification, emphasizing elegance, femininity, and quiet strength. The restrained palette and fluid linework give the painting a timeless, collectible quality.
Provenance: Private collection, Connecticut. The artwork will ship directly from this collection. Certificate of authenticity issued by Myriam Nader Haitian Art Gallery.
About this artist
About this artist
Jean-René Jérôme (Haitian, 1942–1991) was one of Haiti’s most celebrated modern artists and a key figure in the School of Beauty. Known for his exploration of the human form, his art reflects harmony, sensuality, and inner strength. Trained at the School of Fine Arts, he worked across multiple disciplines including drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, dance, theater, and voice. He exhibited internationally in Latin America, Brazil, Canada, Senegal, and Martinique, gaining recognition for his expressive use of color and emotion. His works are featured in major private and institutional collections, including a permanent exhibition at Musée d’Art Nader in Port-au-Prince. As noted by art historian Gérald Alexis in Peintres Haïtiens (Éditions Cercle d’Art, 2000), “Jérôme’s education led him to prefer form over content.” His philosophy and focus on the beauty of the female figure continue to inspire collectors and art lovers worldwide.
