Description

Maxan Jean Louis, a self-taught Haitian naïve Vodou painter, created this powerful original acrylic painting on canvas measuring 24 x 30 inches, titled Nous Sommes A Ti Goave LaMort de Brignol Lindor. Executed in the artist’s vivid, symbol-charged style, the composition depicts a murder investigation, transforming a moment of collective shock and public witnessing into a striking narrative tableau. Flattened silhouettes, rhythmic repetition, and bold color contrasts intensify the emotional atmosphere, while the densely arranged figures guide the eye through the unfolding scene with cinematic urgency. Both visually commanding and historically resonant, this work appeals to collectors seeking contemporary Haitian painting that engages social reality with directness, symbolism, and unmistakable personal voice. The artwork is in excellent condition, signed and dated in the lower left, and is sold unframed. It comes from a private collection in Virginia and will be shipped directly from that collection. A Certificate of Authenticity will be issued by Myriam Nader Haitian Art Gallery upon purchase.

About this artist

Born in Jérémie, Haiti, on March 17, 1966, Maxan Jean Louis began painting in 1992 after encouragement from his cousins, acclaimed artists Henri and Eric Jean-Louis. He quickly developed a naïve style inspired by Vodou culture and Haiti’s political history, moving between ornamental motif-driven compositions and a childlike surrealism often used to address social events. His work is included in the permanent collection of the Charlotte Zander Museum in Bönnigheim, Germany, and he has participated in notable international exhibitions, including the Musée d’Aquitaine in Bordeaux, the Haiti Art Expo during Art Basel Miami Beach 2010, and the Patricia & Philip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University in Miami, where he is featured in Patricia Goodrich’s 2014 multimedia installation Voices & Visions: Artists of Haiti.
