Description

Maxan Jean Louis is a talented self-taught Haitian naïve Vodou painter whose work is deeply rooted in spiritual symbolism and Haiti’s political and cultural history. This original abstract acrylic painting on canvas, measuring 40 x 10 inches, showcases the artist’s confident visual language through expressive forms, rhythmic repetition, and bold color relationships. The composition reflects Jean Louis’s distinctive approach, combining flattened human silhouettes, ornamental motifs, and a spontaneous, almost surreal energy influenced by Vodou iconography and the Saint Soleil aesthetic. The painting is in excellent condition, signed and dated by the artist in the lower right corner, and is sold unframed. It comes from a private collection in Virginia and will be shipped directly from that collection. A Certificate of Authenticity will be issued by Myriam Nader Haitian Art Gallery upon purchase.

About this artist

Born in Jérémie, Haiti, on March 17, 1966, Maxan Jean Louis was encouraged to paint in 1992 by his cousins, renowned artists Henri and Eric Jean-Louis. He quickly developed a personal naïve style that moves fluidly between symbolic abstraction and narrative expression, allowing him to address social themes and spiritual traditions with striking freedom. His work is included in the permanent collection of the Charlotte Zander Museum in Bönnigheim, Germany, and has been exhibited internationally, including at the Musée d’Aquitaine in Bordeaux, Art Basel Miami Beach during the Haiti Art Expo, and the Patricia & Philip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University. Jean Louis is also featured in Patricia Goodrich’s 2014 multimedia installation Voices & Visions: Artists of Haiti.
