Description
Description
Two Mermaids is an original hand-cut steel sculpture by renowned Haitian artist Serge Jolimeau (b. 1952). Measuring 72 × 36 inches, this monumental composition depicts two elegant mermaids, one tenderly holding a child, rendered through intricate openwork and flowing contours that exemplify Haiti's celebrated tradition of métal découpé.
Born in Croix-des-Bouquets, Jolimeau is among Haiti's leading contemporary sculptors. Trained by his father-in-law, the legendary Georges Liautaud, he expanded the country's cut steel tradition through increasingly sophisticated works inspired by Haitian Vodou, mythology, and the natural world. His sculptures are represented in museum and private collections throughout the United States, Europe, and the Caribbean.
Inspired by Lasirèn, the Vodou lwa of the sea, beauty, and abundance, Two Mermaids explores themes of motherhood, protection, and spiritual connection. The artist's masterful use of positive and negative space, rhythmic line, and handcrafted detail transforms reclaimed steel into a striking work of contemporary Haitian art.
This sculpture comes from a private collection in Colorado and will be shipped directly from the collection to the purchaser.
A Certificate of Authenticity issued by Myriam Nader Haitian Art Gallery accompanies the purchase.
About this artist
About this artist
Serge Jolimeau is one of Haiti's most celebrated contemporary metal sculptors and a leading figure in the Croix-des-Bouquets metal art tradition. After graduating from high school, he apprenticed with Serésier Louis-Juste before joining the Centre d'Art in 1972, where he studied under the renowned sculptor Murat Brierre. Working in the tradition pioneered by Georges Liautaud, Jolimeau transforms recycled steel oil drums into intricate sculptures inspired by Haitian Vodou, mythology, and folklore. His highly detailed, lace-like metalwork and distinctive artistic vision have made him one of the foremost masters of Haitian metal sculpture. Since 1979, Jolimeau has exhibited internationally and has participated regularly in the Santa Fe International Folk Art Market since 2005. In 2009, President Bill Clinton selected Jolimeau, together with Micah Ramil Remy and Toyin Folorunso, to create the commemorative awards for the Clinton Global Citizen Awards. Following Haiti's 2010 earthquake, his work was featured through the Clinton Global Initiative and Macy's, introducing Haitian metal art to collectors across the United States. Today, Serge Jolimeau's sculptures are highly sought after by museums and collectors worldwide for their exceptional craftsmanship, spiritual symbolism, and lasting contribution to contemporary Haitian art.
