Description
Description
This original oil on canvas by Haitian artist Hervé Lebreton presents a richly composed still life featuring an arrangement of fruits, glass vessels, and reflective surfaces set against a warm, atmospheric background. The composition is anchored by a metal dish filled with apples and grapes, complemented by pears and translucent glass cups that catch and diffuse light with subtle precision.Lebreton demonstrates a controlled handling of light and texture, using layered tones of deep reds, amber, and gold to create depth and luminosity. The interplay between matte and reflective surfaces enhances the tactile quality of the objects, while delicate highlights and soft transitions contribute to a refined visual harmony. The curling decorative lines introduce a sense of movement within an otherwise stable composition, reinforcing the artist’s sensitivity to balance and rhythm. Executed in 2005, this work reflects Lebreton’s engagement with classical still life traditions while maintaining a distinctly Haitian sensibility through color intensity and compositional warmth. The painting is consistent with the artist’s recognized style and contributes to the broader category of contemporary Haitian still life painting. Provenance includes Myriam Nader Haitian Art Gallery, and a certificate of authenticity will be issued.
About this artist
About this artist
Hervé Lebreton (1941–2026) was a Haitian-born painter who later lived and worked in Canada, known for his neo-surrealist, dreamlike imagery. He began studying fine art at a young age and continued his training at the School of Arts in Port-au-Prince, the ABC School in Paris, and Bellas Artes in Santiago, Chile. Lebreton developed a distinctive visual language characterized by poetic, imaginative compositions and technical precision. His work is often described as neo-surrealist, combining idyllic scenes with symbolic and fantastical elements. As art historian Gérald Alexis noted in Peintres Haïtiens, Lebreton created “dream-like images with undeniable virtuosity.” His paintings have been exhibited internationally and are held in major collections, including museums in Santo Domingo, Montreal, Shreveport, and Haiti. Today, Hervé Lebreton is recognized as an important figure in modern Haitian art, with works sought after by collectors worldwide.
