This blue abstract diptych by renowned Haitian artist Sébastien Jean is a dynamic composition of textured layers and gestural strokes. Bold turquoise markings emerge against a backdrop of grays, blacks, and whites, creating an energetic interplay of movement and depth. Circular impressions and sweeping lines add rhythm, while the rough textures evoke both organic and atmospheric forces. About this artist
Sebastien Jean was born on March 17, 1980, in Thomassin, Haiti. He was a self-taught painter and sculptor who began drawing and painting at the age of 13, primarily on bamboo stalks, encouraged by his mother. "My work is inspired by crafts, particularly in the choice of medium: sawdust, coffee grounds, and sand," Sebastien once said. He gained international recognition through exhibitions with the Fondation Agnès b in Paris, the 54th Venice Biennale, and Global Caribbean III at the Cultural Center of Miami and PIASA in Paris. Additionally, he participated in the Haiti-Africa residency organized by the French Institute from 2007 to 2008, with support from artist Mario Benjamin, who was the curator of this exhibition. His work, which possesses excellent pictorial quality, can be described as neo-expressionist. Sadly, Sebastien passed away in November 2020.
