Description

In this circa 2000 Vodou composition, Frantz Zéphirin summons the paired serpent spirits Damballa and Ayida-Wedo as they descend on either side of a giant hand holding a rainbow-striped quill. Below them, faced vessels recall the govi that house the lwa. Winged figures gather in the upper corners, and two spirals of reaching hands surround robed beings holding a book and a staff. Jars overflowing with gold coins line the foreground, and a ringed planet floats among the clouds. Every surface is worked in dense, jewel-toned detail with crackling lines of light. The painting is signed and inscribed 16800556 at the lower left. Its condition is good, consistent with its age. It comes from a private collection in Maryland and will ship directly to the buyer from there. A certificate of authenticity is included. Use the same title in the Artsy and Google Merchant fields, and the previous medium, dimensions and provenance fields stay as they are. The inscription still needs a check against the painting, since the photo reads closer to 16800956.

About this artist

Frantz Zéphirin (b. 1968, Cap-Haïtien, Haiti) is a Haitian painter known for his vivid, narrative compositions blending history, politics, and Vodou symbolism. He began painting in 1973 under the mentorship of renowned Haitian master Antoine Obin but quickly developed a highly original style distinct from the Cap-Haïtien school. Zéphirin’s work is recognized for intricate detail, intense color, and imaginative imagery, often featuring human figures with animal heads as symbolic commentary on power, society, and human behavior. His paintings draw from biblical themes, historical events, and contemporary life, creating complex visual narratives rich in meaning. His work has been exhibited internationally and featured in major collections and publications, including The New York Times, Le Monde, and The Wall Street Journal. Today, Frantz Zéphirin is regarded as one of the most important contemporary Haitian artists, with works highly sought after by collectors worldwide.
