Description

In Sellers, Cameau Rameau portrays a vivid Haitian market scene where women gather in rhythmic harmony, their baskets overflowing with fruit and grain. The artist’s signature style—elongated figures, balanced composition, and bold yet earthy palette—captures both the dignity and beauty of everyday life in rural Haiti. The repetition of forms and contrast of colors reflect the influence of Haiti’s post-Centre d’Art figurative tradition. Painted circa the 1970s, this work demonstrates Rameau’s refined sense of pattern and movement, emblematic of the vibrant cultural identity found in Haitian naïve art. The painting is in very good condition with minor age-appropriate wear and is sold unframed. It will be shipped directly from the Dominican Republic, and a Certificate of Authenticity will be issued by Myriam Nader Haitian Art Gallery upon purchase.

About this artist

Cameau Rameau was a Haitian painter celebrated for his vividly stylized depictions of daily life, markets, ritual gatherings, and landscapes. Born on April 19, 1943, in Port-au-Prince, he was the elder brother of artist Joseph Cameau. Rameau began his artistic journey in the early 1970s under the mentorship of his brother-in-law, Calixte Henri, working alongside Joseph in the studio of Galerie Monnin. He developed a distinctive technique, often applying oil paint with razor-blade strokes to achieve remarkable surface texture and precision. His compositions reveal both rhythm and structure, balancing intricate detail with a sense of spiritual harmony. Rameau’s subjects ranged from lively market scenes and rural life to mystical tableaux inspired by Haitian ritual and folklore. A devoted family man, he was married and fathered four sons, including Widson Cameau, who followed in his footsteps as a painter. Rameau passed away in late May 2016 at the age of 73. His paintings remain sought after by collectors and are found in private and international collections. His work—rooted in the post-Centre d’Art aesthetic—is admired for its meticulous craftsmanship, vibrant patterning, and fusion of the everyday and the spiritual.
