Decourcelle Gourgue was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on August 24, 1927. He studied painting under his gifted brother, the renowned Haitian master Jacques-Enguerrand Gourgue, and later continued his training with Raymond D. Joseph and P. Beauvoir. He began painting professionally in 1957 and quickly developed a style rooted in Haiti’s rich artistic traditions. Gourgue's work reflects both technical discipline and creative expression, drawing on Haitian culture and everyday life.
