Description

The late Haitian artist Pauleus Vital (1918-1984) signed and dated this original oil on masonite painting in the lower right corner in 1972. Executed in his distinctive Haitian Primitive style, the composition portrays a peaceful village at night, illuminated by moonlight and animated by the quiet rhythm of rural Haitian life. Rich in atmosphere and storytelling, the painting reflects Vital's ability to transform everyday scenes into timeless expressions of Haiti's cultural heritage. Pauleus Vital is recognized as one of Haiti's important self-taught painters, celebrated for his detailed landscapes, village scenes, and vibrant depictions of Haitian traditions. His works are represented in numerous private and public collections and remain highly sought after by collectors of Haitian and Caribbean art. This original painting retains the authentic character and patina expected of a work created more than five decades ago. It exhibits minor age-related wear and losses consistent with its age and history and is offered as is. The condition has been fully reflected in the asking price, and prospective buyers are encouraged to review all available images carefully. This artwork comes from the private collection of Myriam Nader, providing distinguished provenance within one of the leading families dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Haitian art. A Certificate of Authenticity issued by Myriam Nader Haitian Art Gallery accompanies the purchase.

About this artist

Pauleus Vital, born in 1918 in Jacmel and deceased in 1984, was a skilled cabinetmaker and shipbuilder before he actively joined the Centre d'Art in Port-au-Prince in 1958, spurred by the encouragement of his half-brother, Prefete Duffaut. Afterward, he returned to Jacmel, where he passionately continued to paint until his untimely death on June 18, 1984. Today, he stands as one of Haiti's most renowned and influential painters. His artwork is prominently featured in the permanent collections of the Milwaukee Museum of Art, the Waterloo Museum of Art in Iowa, and Ramapo College in Mahwah, New Jersey.
