Collection: Hilome Jose (Haitian)
Hilome Joseph is a Haitian artist born in April 1947 in Jérémie, Haiti. He moved to Port-au-Prince in the late 1960s, where he initially worked as a carpenter. Through a mutual friend, he met the renowned Haitian master Calixte Henry, whose example and guidance inspired Jose to pursue painting seriously. Under Henry’s mentorship, Jose learned to paint with a palette knife, a technique that shaped his signature approach. This knife-painted style gives his compositions a distinctive texture and energy, setting his work apart while also reflecting the influence of Henry’s teaching. Jose’s story—rooted in craftsmanship, mentorship, and self-driven artistic development—places him within an important lineage of Haitian painters whose technique and personal journey are central to their artistic identity.
