Description
This powerful 2001 acrylic on canvas by Jean-Claude Garoute (Tiga), a founding figure of the Saint-Soleil movement, exemplifies his bold Haitian expressionist style. The 36 x 24 inch composition presents a striking, introspective face rendered in saturated blues, yellows, and deep shadow, with piercing eyes and symbolic abstraction that reflect Tiga’s spiritual and psychological depth.Signed and dated by the artist, the painting demonstrates his signature fusion of modernist structure and Haitian metaphysical symbolism, qualities that continue to drive strong collector demand internationally. This work is held in a private Pennsylvania collection and will be shipped directly from the collector upon purchase. A certificate of authenticity will be issued by our gallery. A compelling opportunity to acquire an important, signed work by one of Haiti’s most influential modern masters.

About this artist
Jean-Claude “Tiga” Garoute (1935–2006) was a Haitian painter, sculptor, and cultural innovator who played a central role in shaping modern Haitian art. He is best known as a co-founder of the Saint-Soleil movement, which emphasized intuitive creation, spiritual expression, and artistic freedom outside academic traditions.Tiga developed the Rotation Artistique method, encouraging artists to explore multiple disciplines and materials as a path to creative discovery. He later founded Poto Mitan and KayTiga, spaces dedicated to artistic experimentation and cultural exchange. His work is recognized for its abstract, spiritual style and Solèy Brile (“burning sun”) technique, combining raw textures, symbolic forms, and vibrant color inspired by Vodou and Haitian cultural traditions. Tiga exhibited internationally and influenced generations of Haitian artists.
