Description

This large-scale oil on board by Sisson Blanchard presents a striking family of owls: six blue, densely dotted adults perched shoulder to shoulder along a green branch, their round eyes fixed outward against a deep black background, with five smaller owlets gathered beneath them among clusters of dark seed pods. Vivid red flowers and rust-toned autumn leaves weave through the composition, filling the spaces between the birds and softening the black ground. Blanchard's dense patterning and saturated palette give the piece a rhythmic, almost tapestry-like quality, and the wide 24 x 72 inch format makes it a striking statement piece well suited to a long wall or hallway. Signed "S. Blanchard" at the left center. The painting comes from a private collection in Washington State, where it will ship from. Condition is good, consistent with its age. A certificate of authenticity will be issued.

About this artist

Sisson Blanchard was born in Trouin, Haiti in 1926 and died in 1988. In 1949, once a yard boy at the Centre d'Art, he was encouraged to paint the American sculptor, Jason Seley. His works are characterized by a naive boldness, using bright primary colors to depicts birds and still life. His work is included in the collections of both the Davenport Museum of Art and the Waterloo Museum of Art, in Iowa. Sisson is considered an older Haitian artist before the '70s.
