Collection: Calixte Henry (Haitian, 1933-2010)
Calixte Henry (1933–2010) was a Haitian painter born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, known for a refined and minimalist approach to form combined with a remarkable sensitivity to color. He began painting at the Centre d’Art in 1955 under the guidance of the American painter Barbara Obris. Henry later developed a distinctive technique, abandoning traditional brushes in favor of razor blades—and eventually palette knives—to achieve exceptional precision, transparency, and subtle surface effects. His compositions eliminate unnecessary detail, relying instead on tonal contrasts and simplified drawing to create depth and volume. His work is particularly noted for its nuanced palette of greens, blues, and soft pastel tones, producing delicate shifts of color and atmosphere. As noted in La Peinture Haïtienne and Peintres Haïtiens, Henry’s paintings often reflect a refined monochrome style. Explore available works below.
