Description

This intricate oil painting by Dieudonné Rouanez depicts a lively Haitian marketplace bustling with figures, produce, and woven baskets arranged in rhythmic layers of color and activity. The artist’s distinctive style shines through in the highly detailed clothing, expressive faces, and carefully organized market goods that fill the composition from edge to edge. Rouanez frames the scene with dramatic red curtains and a textured stone-pattern border, transforming the daily life of Haitian vendors into a theatrical tableau rich with cultural symbolism and visual energy. This vibrant work reflects Rouanez’s celebrated ability to portray community, movement, and tradition in a uniquely decorative manner. The painting includes full provenance and a Certificate of Authenticity from Myriam Nader Haitian Art Gallery.

About this artist

Dieudonne Rouanez was born on May 21, 1920, in Petion-Ville, Haiti. He started art by himself then studied it under the supervision of late noted Voodoo artist Gerard Valcin at the Centre d’Art. He was greatly known for his exceptional style in showing voodoo themes. He used bright colors in his paintings. " Reduced to the two-dimensionality of the painted surface, Rouanez subject finds their strength in the rhythmic structure." (Gerald Alexis in his book "Peintres Haitiens")
