Description

Maxan Jean Louis, a self-taught Haitian naïve Vodou painter, created this original acrylic painting on canvas measuring 30 x 12 inches, featuring a striking blue male spirit rendered with bold color and symbolic presence. The elongated format intensifies the figure’s vertical energy and gives the composition a totemic, iconic impact—ideal for collectors seeking Vodou-inspired Haitian art with strong visual identity and modern display appeal. Jean Louis’s signature naïve language—flattened forms, rhythmic patterning, and expressive color—transforms the spirit figure into an arresting image of power, protection, and mystery. The artwork is in excellent condition and is signed in the lower left. It is sold unframed and comes from a private collection in Virginia, from which it will be shipped directly. A Certificate of Authenticity will be issued by Myriam Nader Haitian Art Gallery upon purchase.

About this artist

Born in Jérémie, Haiti, on March 17, 1966, Maxan Jean Louis began painting in 1992 after encouragement from his cousins, acclaimed artists Henri and Eric Jean-Louis. He quickly developed a personal style shaped by Vodou culture and Haiti’s political history, sometimes moving between ornamental motif-driven compositions and a playful, surreal approach to social scenes. His work is included in the permanent collection of the Charlotte Zander Museum in Bönnigheim, Germany, and he has participated in international exhibitions including the Musée d’Aquitaine in Bordeaux, the Haiti Art Expo during Art Basel Miami Beach 2010, and presentations connected to Patricia Goodrich’s 2014 multimedia installation Voices & Visions: Artists of Haiti at the Patricia & Philip Frost Art Museum, Florida International University in Miami.
