Description
Description
This original oil on canvas by Haitian artist A. Labbé presents a vivid river scene animated by figures engaged in daily activity. Set within a lush tropical landscape, the composition captures a moment of communal life as figures gather along the water, washing, carrying goods, and interacting within the natural environment. Labbé’s expressive brushwork and rich impasto create a dynamic surface, where vibrant greens, deep blues, and warm earth tones merge to evoke the density and movement of the landscape. The flowing water, framed by vegetation and trees, introduces a natural rhythm that guides the viewer through the composition. The figures, rendered with gestural energy and simplified forms, reflect the artist’s focus on movement and atmosphere rather than strict detail. This approach situates the work within the broader tradition of modern Haitian painting, where everyday rural life is transformed through color and expressive technique. This painting demonstrates strong decorative presence and is particularly appealing to collectors seeking vibrant Haitian landscape scenes with figurative elements. A certificate of authenticity will be issued.

About this artist
André L'Abbé (Andre Labbe) was a Haitian painter born on January 20, 1950, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Trained at the Académie des Beaux-Arts, he began painting in 1969 and developed a distinctive body of work within modern Haitian art. Influenced by the Impressionist movement, particularly Michel Cédor, L'Abbé is known for expressive brushwork, vibrant color, and compositions that capture light, movement, and daily life in Haiti. His paintings often feature a striking interplay of orange and blue tones, creating depth, contrast, and visual energy. Working within the tradition of Haitian genre painting, L'Abbé combined academic training with a personal, painterly interpretation of everyday scenes. His work reflects a balance between structure and spontaneity, contributing to the evolution of 20th-century Haitian painting. André L'Abbé died on January 6, 2021, in Orlando, Florida.
