Description

This intricate composition by Haitian artist Frantz Zéphirin presents a symbolic Vodou-inspired scene centered around a blue spirit figure emerging from the sea. Painted in 2001, the work combines spiritual imagery with elements of Haitian folklore, including animals, marine forms, and ritual references. The central figure, rendered in a luminous blue palette, appears both human and supernatural, surrounded by hybrid creatures and flowing organic forms. A cross rising from the water and a ship in the background introduce themes of spirituality, history, and memory, while the dense patterning and detailed linework reflect Zéphirin’s highly recognizable style. Executed in acrylic on canvas, the painting is rich in texture and intricate surface detail. The composition unfolds through layered imagery, inviting close observation and interpretation. Zéphirin’s work often blends mythological, religious, and narrative elements, creating scenes that are both visually complex and culturally resonant. Frantz Zéphirin is one of Haiti’s most important contemporary artists, known for elaborate compositions that merge Vodou symbolism, historical references, and imaginative storytelling. His paintings are widely collected for their distinctive visual language and depth of meaning. This original acrylic painting is hand-signed and dated by the artist and is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity issued by Myriam Nader Haitian Art Gallery.

About this artist

Frantz Zephirin started painting in 1973 with the Haitian master Antoine OBIN. Very quickly, he broke away from the styled school of Cap Haitian artists and began to work in a highly original style. Starting with themes from the Bible and current events, his paintings soon reflected the delirium of his powerful, devastating imagination. Zephirin frequently uses animals painted in brilliant, sharply contrasting colors to speak out frankly. His highly creative style, which deals with themes of politics, social, and voodoo subjects, soon captured the art world's attention in Haiti, and his career took off very rapidly. Zephirin's work is characterized by intense colors, intricate patterns, and tightly surrounded compositions. He is exceptionally productive, his imagination is compelling, and his social criticism is disturbing. Presently Zepherin's work is recognizable by human figures with animals heads-representing his deep contempt for the commanding body. His art has been featured in art museums and galleries around the world. Since the Haiti earthquake, Zephirin has been featured in stories in the New York Times, Le Monde, the Wall Street Journal, the Los Angeles Times, the Times of London, the Guardian, and the BBC. His art has been showcased in the exhibit Haiti Art Naif: Memories of Paradise at the art center Denkmalschmiede Hofgen in Germany.
