Description

Le Paysage d'Astro-Moidex3 (2017) by Frantz Zephirin is a striking example of the artist’s visionary, symbol-rich approach to contemporary Haitian painting, where spiritual cosmology, psychological presence, and intricate draftsmanship converge in a single, layered image. Executed in oil on canvas and presented framed at 24 x 20 inches, the work draws the viewer into an atmospheric landscape that feels both celestial and interior, as though it maps an unseen world of memory, spirit, and transformation. At the heart of the composition, a translucent, shell-like form hovers in a deep nocturnal space, its interior animated by embedded orbs and architectural patterns that evoke planetary bodies, protective emblems, and metaphysical forces. To the left, a face emerges from a woven grid of geometry, its singular, watchful eye grounding the scene in consciousness and mystery. Below, a vivid expanse of red foliage introduces a rhythmic pulse of repeated forms, suggesting growth, regeneration, and the enduring vitality of the natural world. Zephirin’s characteristic linear networks—precise, energetic, and almost map-like—create a visual density that rewards prolonged viewing, revealing new symbolic cues and layered narratives with each encounter. Rooted in Haiti’s spiritual traditions and Zephirin’s own deeply personal iconography, the painting stands as both a poetic landscape and a cosmological diagram. It is offered from Georges S. Nader’s private collection in New York and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by Myriam Nader Haitian Art Gallery.

About this artist

Zéphirin started painting in 1973 with the Haitian master Antoine OBIN. Very quickly, he broke away from the styled school of Cap Haitian artists and began to work in a highly original style. Beginning with themes from the Bible and current events, his paintings were soon to reflect the delirium of his powerful devastating imagination. Zéphirin frequently makes use of animals, painted in brilliant, sharply contrasting colors, to speak out frankly. His highly creative style, which deals with themes of politics, social and voodoo subjects, soon captured the attention of the art world in Haiti and his career took off very rapidly. Zéphirin’s work is characterized by intense colors, intricate patterns, and tightly surrounded compositions. Extremely productive, his imagination is compelling and his social criticism is disturbing. Presently Zéphirin’s work is recognizable by human figures with animal heads-representing his deep contempt for the commanding body. Zéphirin’s work has been featured in art museums and galleries around the world. Since the earthquake Zéphirin has been featured in stories in the New York Times, Le Monde, the Wall Street Journal, the Los Angeles Times, the Times of London, the Guardian, and the BBC. The arts of Zéphirin have been showcased in the exhibit Haiti Art Naif: Memories of Paradise at the art center Denkmalschmiede Hofgen in Germany.
