Description
Black Woman in Red & Spirit is an original acrylic on board painting by celebrated Haitian artist Gérard Fortune (1925-2019). Executed in the artist's unmistakable expressive style, the composition features a woman dressed in brilliant red accompanied by a vibrant fish and an enigmatic spiritual presence set against a lush tropical landscape. Through bold color, simplified forms, and dynamic brushwork, Fortune transforms an everyday scene into a powerful visual narrative rich in symbolism and emotion. One of Haiti's most distinctive self-taught painters, Gérard Fortune is internationally recognized for his imaginative compositions that blend daily life, folklore, spirituality, and nature. His paintings are admired for their spontaneous energy, expressive figures, and fearless use of vivid color, qualities that have made his work highly sought after by collectors of Haitian and Caribbean art.
The brilliant reds, lush greens, and expressive forms create a striking visual rhythm while inviting multiple interpretations. The monumental fish, symbolic figure, and tropical vegetation evoke themes of abundance, spirituality, and the enduring relationship between humanity and the natural world. Fortune's intuitive approach to composition gives the painting an emotional immediacy that distinguishes his work within modern Haitian art. Represented in important museum and private collections worldwide, Gérard Fortune remains one of the most original voices in twentieth-century Haitian painting. This artwork comes from a private collection in Colorado and will be shipped directly from the collection to the purchaser. A Certificate of Authenticity issued by Myriam Nader Haitian Art Gallery accompanies the purchase.
