About this artist
About this artist
Levoy Exil was born in 1944 in Soisson-la-Montagne, Haiti, and became one of the principal figures of the Saint Soleil movement, a school of Haitian art rooted in spirituality and collective, almost trance-like creation. His paintings are mystical and abstract, often depicting Vodou Loas, suns and stars, birds, and marassas, the twins central to Haitian spiritual symbolism.
His style draws on primitive and naive traditions while remaining distinctly dreamlike, built through a pointillist technique of small, distinct dots that gradually reveal a larger image shaped by African, Haitian, and Vodou influences. Writer Gerald Alexis described the effect in Peintres Haïtiens, noting that sinuous lines create an effect of dancing figures on Levoy's canvasses.
Exil has exhibited internationally throughout his career and holds a strong following among collectors, particularly in Europe.
