Description

Own a rare and museum-published masterpiece by legendary Haitian artist Hector Hyppolite. Created circa 1947, Colonial House (House Party) is an exceptional oil on cardboard painting that captures a lively social gathering outside a grand colonial home—a classic theme from one of Haiti’s most influential artistic voices. Hyppolite’s signature dotting technique, textured surfaces, and warm palette bring the scene to life, making this a standout example of his sought-after style. This important artwork survived the 2010 Haiti earthquake and was professionally restored by the Smithsonian Institution in 2012. Authentic age marks—including subtle surface craquelure and a broken corner—reflect its remarkable journey and enhance its collectible value. Hyppolite originals with documented restoration by a world-renowned institution are exceedingly rare on the market. Highly desirable and fully published, this painting is featured in Mystical Imagination: The Art of Haitian Master Hector Hyppolite (Haitian Art Society, 2012) and in Hector Hyppolite (Éditions Capri, 2011). It was also connected to the landmark exhibition at the OAS Museum of the Americas in Washington, D.C.—further elevating its importance. Previously held in the distinguished Marie & Georges S. Nader Family Collection, this artwork carries impeccable provenance and international recognition. Now available  through Myriam Nader Haitian Art Gallery in New York, this is a rare opportunity for collectors to acquire a published, Smithsonian-restored masterpiece by one of Haiti’s greatest masters. Serious collectors of Haitian art—and global art investors—will immediately recognize the long-term value of this exceptional piece.

About this artist

By the time of his death in 1948, Hector Hyppolite was widely regarded as Haiti’s foremost painter. As early as 1946, influential figures such as André Breton and Wifredo Lam collected his works and celebrated him as a master of naïve art. His international reputation rose further after UNESCO’s 1947 exhibition in Paris. Born into a family of Vodou priests, Hyppolite did not begin painting until later in life. His travels during World War I took him to New York, Cuba, Dahomey, and Ethiopia before he returned to St. Marc in 1920. Initially, he worked as a shoemaker, house painter, and occasionally as a Vodou priest, while painting postcards for American marines stationed in Haiti. His architectural decorations in St. Marc eventually drew the attention of DeWitt Peters, the founder and director of the Centre d’Art in Port-au-Prince. With Peters’ encouragement, Hyppolite devoted himself entirely to painting. Using chicken feathers, his fingers, and brushes, he created an extraordinary body of work noted for its richness, symbolism, and complexity. Hyppolite’s art is now represented in major museums around the world. In 2008, the Government of Haiti declared June 2008 to June 2009 the Year of Hector Hyppolite, honoring his profound cultural legacy. From November 2011 to February 2012, the Musée du Louvre in Paris held a major exhibition of his work and published a comprehensive book celebrating his life and art. Proceeds from this publication were dedicated to restoring the collection of the Musée d’Art Haïtien du Collège St. Pierre in Port-au-Prince. As one of Haiti’s greatest artists and a patriarch of Haitian art, Hyppolite remains celebrated for his aesthetically complex yet instinctively intuitive paintings. He passed away in 1948 at the height of his fame, leaving behind an enduring legacy that continues to inspire generations of Haitian artists and collectors around the world. .
